Ikat Craft The Indian Handloom & Handicraft

Introduction

Ikat pattern is a type of weaving that’s been around for centuries, and it’s an eco-friendly craft. It’s made from natural materials. However, there are reasons why Ikat isn’t popular yet.  Its handmade nature and limited availability. But if you’re looking for some make over with Ikat dress for your wardrobe? Or just want to learn more about this unique style of weaving, read on!

People initially have mixed feelings about Ikat Crafts.

Ikat Crafts are not mainstream. Earlier days they’re not easy to find in stores. They’re generally considered an exotic choice by many people, especially those who have never seen them before. They are expensive too. The average cost of one-piece dress of Ikat Craft is about $35 USD or INR 3000/- at retail prices!

Moreover, Ikat Crafts made on natural materials like wool and cotton that require resources to produce them. In addition to that, the dyeing process takes several days per colorway.

Ikat Crafts are things you can’t get enough of, almost as soon as you discover them.

You’ll be happy to know that Ikat Craft not only beautifully unique also eco-friendly, organic and sustainable. They are handmade and hand woven with great attention to detail. The result is an amazing textile that looks like nothing else on earth! Ikat Crafts are low maintenance too: they don’t need much care or cleaning up after use with expensive dry cleaning.

Ikat is one of those things that seem so authentic that you feel like you’ve discovered something brand new.

It’s an Indonesian fabric made by hand and in our country Pochampally, Telangna, is one of the ancient Ikat weaving center in India, along with Gujarat and neighbouring Odisha that is why it has an organic feel to it. Pochampally Ikat is better well known as Chitki, Pogudubandhu and Buddabhashi in the region of Telangana, where is produced. Whereas in the other part of India, the handloom design known as Pochampally.

  • Weaving process involves using many different colors as well as a lot of time spent with hands on the loom. That means it’s not exactly economical. Hence if you’re looking for something unique and beautiful, then I would say there’s no better option out there!
  • The color palette used in Ikat patterns tends to be limited. This makes them harder to find than other more common types of textiles such as cotton prints or flannel.

The Ikat process involves many hand-made steps, from weaving to dyeing to sewing.

Handmade! yes you heard it right.  The artisans who create the Ikat Craft are not machines. They work by hand and each step of their work is done by hand. The result is a unique product with no two pieces exactly alike!

Hand woven!  the threads are woven tightly together using an ancient method called “tapestry” weaving. Where each thread has its own color palette and design pattern. Result of that it doesn’t look like any other piece in your existing collection. This makes each piece truly one-of-a-kind. No two will ever be the same!

Hand dyed! no two pieces are exactly alike due to this step as well. Color combinations can vary slightly depending on how much natural dyeing was applied during production (more or less). They will always be beautiful in their own way because they have been created by someone’s hands with love. Another reason you to enjoy them very much indeed 🙂

After the weaving process done

The yarn will be sorted by color and cut into strips. Then after batched by length for wrapping each piece for shipment. A typical batch weighs about 500 grams (1 pound).

Once every 10-12 yards of fabric has been batched (that’s about 2 kilos). A worker will wrap each piece with two layers of plastic wrap before placing them in storage containers with handles. So that they can be transported easily during shipping times when there aren’t many available trucks available around town!

Time to dyeing the fabric

After weaving, the fabric is dyed using natural ingredients. And finished with a pattern of geometric patterns created in a single length of fabric.

The dyeing process is an extremely important part of the Ikat process. It helps to create a unique look for each piece. This can also be seen in their use of natural ingredients such as coffee or tea. That gives each piece its own unique color palette.

The dyeing process can take anywhere from 1-3 days depending on how much time you have available to complete it. It usually involves hand painting onto the threads using natural dyes like turmeric or coffee grounds. That’s the secret behind the different shades depending on where they fall on your textile’s surface i.e., top versus bottom. The longer you wait between coats, the darker your design will become> However, this does not mean that it needs more than one coat!

Ikat is perfect for decorating your home too

Either add a splash of color and texture to your living room, or an accent wall in the kitchen? Ikat Craft can be used as an accent piece around the house or as part of a larger design scheme.

Ikats come in many different styles and colors, so there’s something for everyone!

Conclusion

Ikat is a beautiful, versatile craft that can be used in many ways. Perfect for decorating home or giving as a gift to your love ones.
